Why do hair transplants fail?

Hair transplanting is an operational procedure that will aid in the re-distribution of the hair follicles from one section of the scalp, called the 'donor site', to a bald or balding section of the scalp known as the 'recipient site'. It is used as a last recourse to treat hair loss and balding.

Hair transplants are enduring solutions to the dilemma of baldness and thinning hair. For some subjects, hair transplanting will alone satisfy and they do not require any extra procedures.

Some patients might opt for PRP hair fall therapy or laser hair therapy later. However, this depends on the view of their aesthetic specialist.

Nevertheless, once the procedure of hair transplant is complete, there is still a risk of hair fall or hair loss.

What negatively induces hair fall or hair loss after a hair transplant?

Listed below are the most common reasons for hair fall or hair loss after a hair transplanting procedure.

  • Shock loss - This is a phenomenon that causes hair to fall in either the donor or recipient area of the scalp.
  • Graft rejection - The patient's immune system can fight the newly grafted follicles when they are viewed as a foreign body. This may lead to rejection of the grafts that can lead to hair loss.
  • Smoking - Cigarettes are made of tobacco which contains nicotine and tar amongst others. Nicotine is grasped to be the addictive substance present in cigarettes, but what is not generally known is that it can accumulate and obstruct capillaries leading to a cut in blood flow to the region. The lips and toes are the primary indicators of nicotine accumulation. The other reason is the inhalation of carbon monoxide. Our bodies eagerly absorb carbon monoxide rather than oxygen when it’s made available, this is why people faint when confined around excessive smoke. CO (carbon monoxide) can decrease down the process of healing by stripping generating cells of oxygen. This ultimately leads to either prolonged healing periods or even necrosis (death) of tissues. All these reasons put unitedly are why surgeons ask subjects to refrain from tobacco of any form both before and after the surgery.
  • Inadequate facilities at a clinic/hospital - The unavailability of certain facilities like hygiene, infrastructure, equipment, etc plays a minor role in contributing to hair fall.
  • Inexperienced surgeon - If the leading surgeon has limited experience there are chances of a mishap during surgery and prepping of the graft follicles which can contribute to shock loss, eventually leading to hair fall or hair loss.
  • Neglecting aftercare steps - Once a hair transplant is complete, it is crucial that the patient follows a set routine given by their physician for the first year.
  • Irregular use of medication - After a hair transplant is complete, the surgeon will prescribe oral and/ or topical medication like; finasteride, oral supplements, or minoxidil to diminish post-op hair loss. Inadequate use of the prescribed medication can prompt hair fall or hair loss in patients.
  • Underlying medical ailments - not treating underlying pathological conditions like male pattern baldness can encourage hair fall to take place once again after a hair transplant.
